In areas that went GSM/GAIT only, such as N. and S. Jersey in the last 6
months, what happened to al the TDMA phone they had in stock ?

What if I wanted to replace my TDMA phone with another new, lighter TDMA
one as they were selling 6 months ago, could I any longer do it ?

You might check with an agent (non corporate store) they may have some
to get rid of, but why stay TDMA? Just curious.

so get a GAIT phone and sign up for one of the brand new Nation plans
for GAIT phones. It isn't Pref Net, it's completely nationwide, with
rollover. My brother has it on his T62u. They're new as of July 1. You
can't beat a GAIT phone with a National plan.

You probably would have to obtain another TDMA phone,
claim that you lost your present phone, then tell them that
you have an existing TDMA phone that you want your
service transferred to.

I doubt that they would sell you a TDMA phone. They probably
transferred existing stocks to areas that have not yet been
converted to GSM.

Look at the prices of the classic TDMA phones such as
the V60T on eBay. Quite amazing what used TDMA phones
are selling for.

I am right now in W. Memphis, AR on Cingular TDMA with my Nokia 6340i.
Earlier today after leaving Southfield, MI I was on Centennial Wireless
TDMA in MI, ATTWS TDMA and GSM in MI, IN and KY. This phone will pick
up TDMA networks around the country on the Nation Plan with the correct
IRDB (which should be downloaded automatically over the air). Previous
to this phone, I had a TDMA/AMPS only Nokia. With that phone I picked
up TDMA/AMPS systems all over the country. The coverage is the same for
both phones(same rate plan). The only difference is that GSM systems
are now added into the mix.

How do you know if you are on TDMA or GPS?

With the 6340i it will say "Call Forwarding Active" before a call is
placed. Not sure why Nokia made it that way, but that's how I know...
The T62u has a code you can enter (sorry, I can't remember what it is)
but it will display G, T or A based on the system.

You go into field test mode by inputting *3001#12345#. The figures will
disappear, then turn the phone off then back on. It will create a menu
item #12. You can turn off f-t mode by selecting menu 12 then inputting
0000 OK, this puts it back into normal mode(to get into field test mode,
go to menu 12 and enter a screen # ie: 2101 or 0106). The 01 screens
deal with GSM, the 21 screens deal with TDMA/AMPS. You will see channel
#s and signal strength, DCCH for TDMA, ACCH for AMPS and CCCH for GSM.
Also the SID's(CID) will be displayed. To get a cryptic key to what the
figures are on a page, hold down * for 2 seconds(same thing to cancel
the info). My phone pretty much no longer says 'call forwarding
active', so I can't tell by that. Bob, do I remember you from a few
months as living in the Detroit area? If so, I'm still getting mostly
TDMA (when I'm home-right now in W. Memphis, AR @ flyin j truckstop on
452 KB/sec wi-fi in my truck)where I live in Grosse Pointe Park, even
the towers in the Village in GP, GPF city hall and the Grosse Pointe
yacht club are mostly TDMA.

Sure sounds like a lot when you combine the Peak and OffPeak like that.
If you can live with 250 Peak min, more power to you. Not many people
I've seen, who require nationwide coverage, have been able to stay under
those minutes. You gotta use it not me, but I wouldn't ever use Pref
Net. Too much of a hassle checking the alphatag all the time.

Why would you (or I) need to do that?

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by that, but I'm sure you know how
Pref Net works. My plan doesn't require me to check alphatags and I
won't have a plan that does.

I have a Preferred Nation plan, and I don't have any such hassles.

Well I just replaced my Ericcson 278D with a Nokia 2260 from a S. Jersey store with same phone number.
Cingular had both TDMA and Preferred Nation available there, despite what the website says, which says neither are available. They don't put on the website what they don't want you to know.

Now I don't have to worry about getting a busted radiator hose in God's country and getting "No Coverage" because the stupid GSM phones don't do Analog, or putting up with the GSM-bias, SIM cards, and lack of TDMA roaming agreements on a GAIT phone.

ok John, fine, whatever... even GSM phones on Pref Net could possibly
say extend on CPN, but you're the cellphone GOD and all the rules for us
commoners don't apply to you.

You're not only rude, but missing the point -- here in the West, there is *no*
roaming to worry about, because there is *no* roaming. In addition, I've
never seen any non-preferred GSM roaming in any of the other markets I've
visited with my tri-band GSM-only phone. So where would I have to go to risk
non-preferred GSM roaming?

actually, I'm not missing the point, your point of view is too narrow.
Not everyone here is out west like you. When you say why should I worry
about that, you assum I am out west when I'm actuall in a preconversion
market in Florida, where you still need to watch your alphatags. As for
me being rude... I resent know-it-alls such as yourself, so please
forgive my sarcasm. If you read around, you'll notice no such attitude
with anyone else.

I didn't say that. What I said was:

Simple statement of fact. You took issue what that, rudely.

>you assum I am out west

I'm not assuming anything about you.

Because ... ?

You were.

No excuse for being rude, even if true, which it isn't.

Try not to get so annoyed over nothing.
